Now here's a problem in return. Add mathematical symbols among these digits, keeping the digits in the same order, to get an expression equalling 2006. 1 2 3 4 5 Richard --------------------------------------------------------------- Happy New Year (8! / 7!) + (6!-54)*3 Jarek --------------------------------------------------------------- Hello, Answer to Math Puzzle on http://www.mathpuzzle.com/ is (8-7*6)*(5-4^3) = 2006 (8-(7*6))*(5-(4^3)) = 2006 I wrote a quick and dirty vbscript in a day or so. I had to learn vbscript anyway and this was a nice problem. I am sure a more elegant solution exists in LISP. Teri Roberts --------------------------------------------------------------- I have too much time on my hands! 8*7+6^5/4+3! = 2006 Justin http://www.statisticool.com --------------------------------------------------------------- 8 * 7 + 6^5 / 4 + 3! = 2006 Getting ready for next year: (8 + 7 + 654) * 3 = 2007 another 2006: 8! / 7! + (6! - 54) * 3 another 2007: (-8 * 7 + 6! + 5! / 4!) * 3 DENIS BORRIS --------------------------------------------------------------- 8*7+6^5/4+3!=2006 George S --------------------------------------------------------------- 8*7+(6^5)/4+3! = 2006 Francisco Pobes --------------------------------------------------------------- In regards to the puzzle: insert standard mathematical operations into 8 7 6 5 4 3 to make an _expression equal to 2006. By hand the closest I was able to get was 8*7+6^5/4+3 = 2003 Then I thought you could group numbers together at which point I gave up and wrote an algorithm and found 8*7/6*5*43 = 2006.67 and 87+6*5*4^3 = 2007 Please provide me the answer so I can put my mind at ease. Pat Mcgowen --------------------------------------------------------------- (8-7*6)*(5-4^3)=2006 Al Stanger --------------------------------------------------------------- 8 x 7 + 6 ^ 5 / 4 + 3 ! = 2006 Dr. Peter D. Thomas --------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Ed I waited for news of a better answer on your site, but here's one provided by a colleague - OK, I think, providing ^ and ! Are accepted as "standard math symbols". 8 x 7 + 6 ^ 5 / 4 + 3! He also offered an even simpler one if re-arrangement of the digits is permitted. (8 x 7 + 3) x (6 x 5 + 4) Regards Lindsay Martin
